Phone returns, refurbishment and material recovery

Elisa is a major mobile phone retailer in Finland, and we aim to increase sales of used and refurbished phones. Extending a phone’s useful life can reduce its lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions, a significant share of which typically arises from manufacturing.

How phone recycling works at Elisa

Customers can bring a broken or unwanted phone to a store. The condition of the device is assessed to determine whether it can be repaired, refurbished for reuse, dismantled for spare parts or sent for material recycling.

Repair can extend the useful life of the device with either the same or a new user. If a device is refurbished for reuse, it undergoes secure data handling and its data is erased before possible resale.

If a device is dismantled, usable components can be used as spare parts for other devices. Devices sent for material recycling are processed to recover materials such as gold, silver, palladium, copper and aluminium. Recovered materials can be used as raw materials for new products.

Elisa Viihde remote controls are refurbished for reuse

Some returned Elisa Viihde Premium remote controls, or their usable components, are refurbished and reused. This can extend the useful life of the remote controls and their components.

Returning phones for reuse or material recovery

Elisa offers phone repair services and a collection service for phones that are no longer in use. Returned phones are assessed for their suitability for reuse and can be refurbished where appropriate. Devices that are not suitable for reuse are sent for appropriate recycling to recover materials. Any potential climate benefit from returning a phone depends on how the device is processed and whether its reuse, for example, avoids the purchase of a new phone

Bring your old phone to one of our stores. Depending on its condition, we will either refurbish it for reuse or send it for appropriate recycling.

If your phone is in good condition and working order, returning it may also have financial value for you. When returning a relatively recent phone, you may be eligible for Elisa’s Trade-in Benefit, which provides credit towards the purchase of a new phone.
